Thanksgiving Day Races

Santa Barbara’s climate offers ideal conditions to run your first, fastest or funnest race almost any time of the year.  Your relatives and friends are coming to Santa Barbara to eat turkey, watch football and if you’re lucky spend some time with you.  What better way to do that than to sign up for one of Santa Barbara’s Thanksgiving Day races.  Yes, this year you have a choice where to drag your family to burn some calories and enjoy the “warm” weather before the football games, turkey and desserts.

Run Santa Barbara offers the long standing 4 miler which is run out in Goleta.  Starting near the Magnolia Center on Hollister Avenue this race has been going steadily for 16 years. I have run this race a few times and if you are looking for a flat, fast 4 mile run this is a good choice.  Once you’re off Hollister Avenue it follows a scenic bike path, back through the neighborhoods to the finish.  The course this year is the course they have used in years past.  You can register race day, but due to long lines I would suggest you sign-up through the site.  the race starts at 9:00 AM.

If you’re interested in running or walking a shorter race Zeeblu is offering a charity 5k along the beach in downtown Santa Barbara.  There is also a fun run for the kids on the beach. This first year race is a fundraiser for the Daniel Bryant Youth and Family Treatment Center and the SB Food Bank.  Chad Ratliffe, the race Director, says that 100% of the proceeds will go to charity.  This picturesque course will inspire in even the most sedentary family member into walking for a few miles; even if they don’t what better way to spend your time waiting than looking out at the ocean or mountains.

Whether you’re looking to catch-up with friends and family or beat your bother-in-law to the finish line, one of these two races will fit the bill.  Burn some calories and enjoy a guilt free thanksgiving day by getting out and exercising.
